That Beautiful Sound

Todays blog post does mean a lot to me because it centers around the importance of music within a movie. I could talk for hours about how music makes such a difference when added within the plot of a movie or even a television show but for the sake of this post, I will only be focusing on my specific film opening. Music is very special to me because it has the power to manipulate feelings and tones without the audience even noticing due to its subtly. This will come to great use for Clara and I's film opening as we both believe that the music we use should play an extremely important part.

Finding The Right Fit

It is easy to understand that every genre of film should typically have a certain genre of music to properly maintain the environment and help contribute to the appropriate plot. allowing the audience to make appropriate guesses based on the content they are given. Music plays an important part in the content being fed to the audience because a change in the music can allow the audience to think of something totally different than they would have given if another song had been playing.

In our film introduction specifically, we fit within a thriller/comedy genre. There isn't music that is technically considered "comical", at least any that I would consider using. So, it would be in our best interest to chose a song that would fit better for a thriller genre. This means, at least in my opinion, that the song should have some eerie feel to it. This doesn't necessarily have to mean that the song itself is creepy, just when put into our opening, and given the context of our scene, it would make the audience question what is happening, which is exactly what a thriller should do. I also feel that a "more serious" song would work nicely as it contrasts with the comedic or less serious scene within our opening. This song would be playing in the first few shots of our opening. This would be the song playing from the criminals AirPods and a diegetic sound. After talking back and forth with Clara, we think we found a perfect fit. The song that we would like to use would be Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want by The Smiths.

Listen to it right here:

We feel that this song would fit perfectly because the song talks about "getting what I want" which is what the criminal in our film tried to do before obviously getting arrested. I feel that this song playing as the criminal is doing silly things that I described in a past blog post would work so well. This song also adds some sophistication to the cinematography because it is more inclined to be taken seriously considering it isn't a basic pop song.

Ideally, we would like to use two songs. The one just mentioned, and then one more that would be included when the screen goes black as the title appears. This song I would like to be more lighthearted to let the audience know that this film would be enjoyable, much like the song used within the Mr. Right opening scene. We still aren't sure what song this would be but I will continue to provide my blogs with more information as we figure it out ourselves. Another current roadblock we are facing is figuring out the logistics of actually getting the music we want. This is because we will have to request the rights to use the songs we want within our opening, so we will have to contact the owners. Once we confirm what we will be doing, I will update progress on obtaining our ideal songs!
